(i) All circles are ___ . (congruent, similar)

similar

(ii) All squares are ___ . (similar, congruent)

similar

(iii) All ___ triangles are similar. (isosceles, equilateral)

equilateral

(iv) Two polygons of the same number of sides are similar, if (a) their corresponding angles are ___ and (b) their corresponding sides are ___ . (equal, proportional)

(a) equal, (b) proportional

2Give two different examples of pair of (i) similar figures. (ii) non-similar figures.

(i) Similar figures

  • A triangle and a quadrilateral.
3State whether the following quadrilaterals are similar or not: (Fig. 6.8 — rhombus PQRS of side 1.5 cm and square ABCD of side 3 cm)

Their corresponding sides are proportional, since PQAB = 1.53 = 12 for all sides.

But their corresponding angles are not equal. All angles of ABCD are 90°, while the angles of PQRS are not 90°.

The quadrilaterals are not similar.

Exercise 6.2

1In Fig. 6.17, (i) and (ii), DE || BC. Find EC in (i) and AD in (ii).

(i) AD = 1.5 cm, DB = 3 cm, AE = 1 cm

Since DE || BC, by the Basic Proportionality Theorem:

ADDB = AEEC ⇒ 1.53 = 1EC ⇒ EC = 3 × 11.5 = 2

EC = 2 cm

(ii) DB = 7.2 cm, AE = 1.8 cm, EC = 5.4 cm

Since DE || BC, by the Basic Proportionality Theorem:

ADDB = AEEC ⇒ AD7.2 = 1.85.4 ⇒ AD = 7.2 × 1.85.4 = 2.4

AD = 2.4 cm

2E and F are points on the sides PQ and PR respectively of a ΔPQR. For each of the following cases, state whether EF || QR:

EF || QR if PEEQ = PFFR (converse of the Basic Proportionality Theorem).

(i) PE = 3.9 cm, EQ = 3 cm, PF = 3.6 cm and FR = 2.4 cm

PEEQ = 3.93 = 1.3 ; PFFR = 3.62.4 = 1.5

The ratios are not equal.

EF is not parallel to QR.

(ii) PE = 4 cm, QE = 4.5 cm, PF = 8 cm and RF = 9 cm

PEEQ = 44.5 = 89 ; PFFR = 89

The ratios are equal.

EF || QR

(iii) PQ = 1.28 cm, PR = 2.56 cm, PE = 0.18 cm and PF = 0.36 cm

EQ = 1.28 – 0.18 = 1.10 cm ; FR = 2.56 – 0.36 = 2.20 cm
PEEQ = 0.181.10 = 955 ; PFFR = 0.362.20 = 955

The ratios are equal.

EF || QR

3In Fig. 6.18, if LM || CB and LN || CD, prove that AMAB = ANAD.

In ΔABC, LM || CB. So, by the Basic Proportionality Theorem:

AMAB = ALAC ... (1)

In ΔADC, LN || CD. So:

ANAD = ALAC ... (2)

From (1) and (2):

AMAB = ANAD

4In Fig. 6.19, DE || AC and DF || AE. Prove that BFFE = BEEC.

In ΔABC, DE || AC. So, by the Basic Proportionality Theorem:

BDDA = BEEC ... (1)

In ΔABE, DF || AE. So:

BDDA = BFFE ... (2)

From (1) and (2):

BFFE = BEEC

5In Fig. 6.20, DE || OQ and DF || OR. Show that EF || QR.

In ΔPOQ, DE || OQ. So, by the Basic Proportionality Theorem:

PEEQ = PDDO ... (1)

In ΔPOR, DF || OR. So:

PFFR = PDDO ... (2)

From (1) and (2): PEEQ = PFFR.

So, in ΔPQR, the line EF divides PQ and PR in the same ratio.

By the converse of BPT, EF || QR

6In Fig. 6.21, A, B and C are points on OP, OQ and OR respectively such that AB || PQ and AC || PR. Show that BC || QR.

In ΔPOQ, AB || PQ. So, by the Basic Proportionality Theorem:

OAAP = OBBQ ... (1)

In ΔPOR, AC || PR. So:

OAAP = OCCR ... (2)

From (1) and (2): OBBQ = OCCR.

So, in ΔOQR, the line BC divides OQ and OR in the same ratio.

By the converse of BPT, BC || QR

7Using Theorem 6.1, prove that a line drawn through the mid-point of one side of a triangle parallel to another side bisects the third side.

Given: In ΔABC, D is the mid-point of AB and a line DE || BC meets AC at E.

To prove: E is the mid-point of AC.

Proof: Since DE || BC, by Theorem 6.1 (BPT):

ADDB = AEEC

But AD = DB (D is the mid-point of AB). So, ADDB = 1.

AEEC = 1 ⇒ AE = EC

So, DE bisects the third side AC.

8Using Theorem 6.2, prove that the line joining the mid-points of any two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side.

Given: In ΔABC, D and E are the mid-points of AB and AC respectively.

To prove: DE || BC.

Proof: AD = DB and AE = EC.

ADDB = 1 and AEEC = 1 ⇒ ADDB = AEEC

So, DE divides AB and AC in the same ratio.

By Theorem 6.2 (converse of BPT), DE || BC

9ABCD is a trapezium in which AB || DC and its diagonals intersect each other at the point O. Show that AOBO = CODO.

Construction: Through O, draw EO || DC (and so EO || AB), meeting AD at E.

In ΔADC, EO || DC. So, by BPT:

AEED = AOOC ... (1)

In ΔDAB, EO || AB. So:

AEED = BOOD ... (2)

From (1) and (2): AOOC = BOOD.

Rearranging, AOBO = CODO

10The diagonals of a quadrilateral ABCD intersect each other at the point O such that AOBO = CODO. Show that ABCD is a trapezium.

Given: AOBO = CODO, i.e., AOCO = BODO ... (1)

Construction: Through O, draw OE || AB, meeting AD at E.

In ΔDAB, EO || AB. So, by BPT:

AEED = BOOD ... (2)

From (1) and (2): AEED = AOOC.

So, in ΔADC, EO divides AD and AC in the same ratio. By the converse of BPT, EO || DC.

Now, EO || AB and EO || DC. So, AB || DC.

So, ABCD is a trapezium.

Exercise 6.3

1State which pairs of triangles in Fig. 6.34 are similar. Write the similarity criterion used by you for answering the question and also write the pairs of similar triangles in the symbolic form:

(i) ∠A = 60°, ∠B = 80°, ∠C = 40° ; ∠P = 60°, ∠Q = 80°, ∠R = 40°

The corresponding angles are equal.

Similar by AAA criterion: ΔABC ~ ΔPQR

(ii) AB = 2, BC = 2.5, CA = 3 ; PQ = 6, QR = 4, PR = 5

ABQR = 24 = 12 ; BCRP = 2.55 = 12 ; CAPQ = 36 = 12

The corresponding sides are proportional.

Similar by SSS criterion: ΔABC ~ ΔQRP

(iii) LM = 2.7, MP = 2, LP = 3 ; DE = 4, EF = 5, DF = 6

MPDE = 24 = 12 ; LPDF = 36 = 12 ; LMEF = 2.75 ≠ 12

The sides are not proportional.

The triangles are not similar.

(iv) MN = 2.5, ML = 5, ∠M = 70° ; QP = 5, QR = 10, ∠Q = 70°

MNQP = 2.55 = 12 ; MLQR = 510 = 12 ; ∠M = ∠Q = 70°

Two sides are proportional and the included angles are equal.

Similar by SAS criterion: ΔNML ~ ΔPQR

(v) AB = 2.5, BC = 3, ∠A = 80° ; DF = 5, EF = 6, ∠F = 80°

ABDF = 12 and BCEF = 12, but ∠A is not the angle included between AB and BC.

So, SAS criterion cannot be applied.

The triangles are not similar.

(vi) ∠D = 70°, ∠E = 80° ; ∠Q = 80°, ∠R = 30°

In ΔDEF: ∠F = 180° – 70° – 80° = 30° ; In ΔPQR: ∠P = 180° – 80° – 30° = 70°
∠D = ∠P, ∠E = ∠Q, ∠F = ∠R

Similar by AAA criterion: ΔDEF ~ ΔPQR

2In Fig. 6.35, ΔODC ~ ΔOBA, ∠BOC = 125° and ∠CDO = 70°. Find ∠DOC, ∠DCO and ∠OAB.

DOB is a straight line.

∠DOC + ∠BOC = 180° ⇒ ∠DOC = 180° – 125° = 55°

In ΔODC:

∠DCO = 180° – ∠CDO – ∠DOC = 180° – 70° – 55° = 55°

Since ΔODC ~ ΔOBA, the corresponding angles are equal.

∠OAB = ∠OCD = 55°

∠DOC = 55°, ∠DCO = 55°, ∠OAB = 55°

3Diagonals AC and BD of a trapezium ABCD with AB || DC intersect each other at the point O. Using a similarity criterion for two triangles, show that OAOC = OBOD.

In ΔOAB and ΔOCD:

∠AOB = ∠COD (vertically opposite angles)
∠OAB = ∠OCD (alternate angles, AB || DC)

So, ΔOAB ~ ΔOCD (AA similarity criterion).

Corresponding sides of similar triangles are proportional.

OAOC = OBOD

In ΔPQR, ∠1 = ∠2, i.e., ∠PQR = ∠PRQ.

So, PQ = PR (sides opposite to equal angles)

Given QRQS = QTPR ⇒ QRQS = QTPQ ⇒ QSQR = PQQT

In ΔPQS and ΔTQR:

QPQT = QSQR and ∠PQS = ∠TQR = ∠1 (common angle)

By SAS similarity criterion, ΔPQS ~ ΔTQR

∠RPQ = ∠RTS (given)
∠PRQ = ∠TRS (common angle)

By AA similarity criterion, ΔRPQ ~ ΔRTS

6In Fig. 6.37, if ΔABE ≅ ΔACD, show that ΔADE ~ ΔABC.

Since ΔABE ≅ ΔACD, their corresponding parts are equal (CPCT).

In ΔADE and ΔABC:

ADAB = AEAC and ∠DAE = ∠BAC (common angle)

By SAS similarity criterion, ΔADE ~ ΔABC

(i) ΔAEP ~ ΔCDP

∠AEP = ∠CDP = 90° (AD and CE are altitudes)
∠APE = ∠CPD (vertically opposite angles)

By AA criterion, ΔAEP ~ ΔCDP

(ii) ΔABD ~ ΔCBE

∠ADB = ∠CEB = 90°
∠ABD = ∠CBE (common angle)

By AA criterion, ΔABD ~ ΔCBE

(iii) ΔAEP ~ ΔADB

∠AEP = ∠ADB = 90°
∠PAE = ∠BAD (common angle)

By AA criterion, ΔAEP ~ ΔADB

(iv) ΔPDC ~ ΔBEC

∠PDC = ∠BEC = 90°
∠PCD = ∠BCE (common angle)

By AA criterion, ΔPDC ~ ΔBEC

8E is a point on the side AD produced of a parallelogram ABCD and BE intersects CD at F. Show that ΔABE ~ ΔCFB.

In ΔABE and ΔCFB:

∠BAE = ∠FCB (opposite angles of a parallelogram, ∠A = ∠C)
∠AEB = ∠CBF (alternate angles, AE || BC)

By AA similarity criterion, ΔABE ~ ΔCFB

9In Fig. 6.39, ABC and AMP are two right triangles, right angled at B and M respectively. Prove that: (i) ΔABC ~ ΔAMP (ii) CAPA = BCMP

(i) ΔABC ~ ΔAMP

∠ABC = ∠AMP = 90°
∠BAC = ∠MAP (common angle)

By AA criterion, ΔABC ~ ΔAMP

(ii) CAPA = BCMP

Since ΔABC ~ ΔAMP, their corresponding sides are proportional.

CAPA = BCMP

10CD and GH are respectively the bisectors of ∠ACB and ∠EGF such that D and H lie on sides AB and FE of ΔABC and ΔEFG respectively. If ΔABC ~ ΔFEG, show that: (i) CDGH = ACFG (ii) ΔDCB ~ ΔHGE (iii) ΔDCA ~ ΔHGF

Since ΔABC ~ ΔFEG: ∠A = ∠F, ∠B = ∠E and ∠ACB = ∠FGE.

So, 12∠ACB = 12∠FGE ⇒ ∠ACD = ∠FGH and ∠DCB = ∠HGE (CD and GH are bisectors)

(ii) ΔDCB ~ ΔHGE

∠DBC = ∠HEG (∠B = ∠E)
∠DCB = ∠HGE

By AA criterion, ΔDCB ~ ΔHGE

(iii) ΔDCA ~ ΔHGF

∠DAC = ∠HFG (∠A = ∠F)
∠DCA = ∠HGF

By AA criterion, ΔDCA ~ ΔHGF

(i) CDGH = ACFG

From (iii), ΔDCA ~ ΔHGF. So, their corresponding sides are proportional.

CDGH = ACFG

11In Fig. 6.40, E is a point on side CB produced of an isosceles triangle ABC with AB = AC. If AD ⊥ BC and EF ⊥ AC, prove that ΔABD ~ ΔECF.

In ΔABC, AB = AC. So, ∠ABC = ∠ACB (angles opposite to equal sides)

In ΔABD and ΔECF:

∠ADB = ∠EFC = 90°
∠ABD = ∠ECF (∠ABC = ∠ACB)

By AA similarity criterion, ΔABD ~ ΔECF

12Sides AB and BC and median AD of a triangle ABC are respectively proportional to sides PQ and QR and median PM of ΔPQR (see Fig. 6.41). Show that ΔABC ~ ΔPQR.

Given: ABPQ = BCQR = ADPM

AD and PM are medians. So, BD = 12BC and QM = 12QR.

BCQR = 2BD2QM = BDQM
So, ABPQ = BDQM = ADPM

Hence, ΔABD ~ ΔPQM (SSS similarity criterion). So, ∠ABD = ∠PQM, i.e., ∠B = ∠Q.

In ΔABC and ΔPQR:

ABPQ = BCQR and ∠B = ∠Q

By SAS similarity criterion, ΔABC ~ ΔPQR

13D is a point on the side BC of a triangle ABC such that ∠ADC = ∠BAC. Show that CA2 = CB.CD.

In ΔADC and ΔBAC:

∠ADC = ∠BAC (given)
∠ACD = ∠BCA (common angle)

So, ΔADC ~ ΔBAC (AA similarity criterion).

Corresponding sides of similar triangles are proportional.

CACB = CDCA

So, CA2 = CB . CD

14Sides AB and AC and median AD of a triangle ABC are respectively proportional to sides PQ and PR and median PM of another triangle PQR. Show that ΔABC ~ ΔPQR.

Given: ABPQ = ACPR = ADPM

Construction: Produce AD to E so that DE = AD. Join BE and CE. Similarly, produce PM to N so that MN = PM. Join QN and RN.

The diagonals of ABEC bisect each other. So, ABEC is a parallelogram. Hence, CE = AB and AE = 2AD.

Similarly, PQNR is a parallelogram. Hence, RN = PQ and PN = 2PM.

So, ACPR = CERN = 2AD2PM = AEPN

Hence, ΔACE ~ ΔPRN (SSS). So, ∠CAE = ∠RPN ... (1)

Similarly, BE = AC and QN = PR. So, ΔABE ~ ΔPQN (SSS). Hence, ∠BAE = ∠QPN ... (2)

Adding (1) and (2): ∠BAC = ∠QPR.

In ΔABC and ΔPQR:

ABPQ = ACPR and ∠BAC = ∠QPR

By SAS similarity criterion, ΔABC ~ ΔPQR

15A vertical pole of length 6 m casts a shadow 4 m long on the ground and at the same time a tower casts a shadow 28 m long. Find the height of the tower.

At the same time, the sun’s rays make the same angle with the ground. The pole and the tower are vertical.

So, the triangle formed by the pole and its shadow is similar to the triangle formed by the tower and its shadow (AA criterion).

Height of towerHeight of pole = Shadow of towerShadow of pole ⇒ h6 = 284 ⇒ h = 42

Height of the tower 42 m

16If AD and PM are medians of triangles ABC and PQR, respectively where ΔABC ~ ΔPQR, prove that ABPQ = ADPM.

Since ΔABC ~ ΔPQR:

ABPQ = BCQR and ∠B = ∠Q

AD and PM are medians. So, BD = 12BC and QM = 12QR.

ABPQ = BCQR = 2BD2QM = BDQM

In ΔABD and ΔPQM:

ABPQ = BDQM and ∠ABD = ∠PQM

So, ΔABD ~ ΔPQM (SAS similarity criterion).

Hence, ABPQ = ADPM
