Activity 1

Walk around your school and create its map.

Write

1What do I really like about my school?

I like the big playground, the library and my friendly teachers.

2How can I make my school greener?

By planting trees and caring for them, using dustbins, saving water, switching off lights and fans, and making a compost pit.

3In case there is any difficulty at school, whom do I talk to or inform?

My class teacher, the principal or my parents.

Be a School Explorer!

Discuss your findings with the class.

What did you find? Two taps were leaking and some fans were on in an empty room.

What made you feel concerned? Litter was lying near the canteen.

What surprised you? Many butterflies visit our school garden.

What made you feel proud? Our school has a compost pit and many trees.

Waste Management

Name the colour of the bin used for dry waste and wet waste.

Dry waste: Blue   Wet waste: Green

What are the various recyclers in your area called? Find out what each one collects.

They are called kabadiwala or raddiwala. They collect old newspapers, cardboard, plastic bottles, glass bottles, metal and old electronic items.

1What things does your school give to recyclers?

Old newspapers, used notebooks, cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and broken metal furniture.

2Ask your parents if there are any items they had set aside to give to the recyclers.

Old newspapers, empty bottles and tins, old clothes and a broken mixer.

Find out: Ask a recycler to visit your class.

Activity 2

Segregation Game — put each item in the correct box.

Green box (wet waste): banana peel, vegetable peels, used tea bag, leftover food.

Blue box (dry waste): chips packet, used tissue, aluminium foil, pencil shavings, old pen.

Items for recycler: newspaper, plastic bottle, cardboard box, plastic can, notebook, steel spoon, old toy, juice carton, cloth bag.

Batteries and broken glass should be kept separately. Wrap broken glass before giving it away.

How is wet waste managed?

In your school: It is put in a compost pit and turned into manure for the garden.

In your home: It is put in the green bin for the waste collector, or made into compost in a pot.

Discuss

1What happens if we do not separate our waste?

Waste cannot be recycled or made into compost. It piles up in big heaps. It smells bad, attracts flies and pollutes land and water. The work of sanitation workers becomes harder and unsafe.

2What can we do to make the work of sanitation workers easier and safer?

We should separate our waste and wrap sharp things. We should not litter. They should get gloves, masks and boots. We must respect and thank them.

Activity 3

Keep a black tile and a white tile in the Sun. Which one felt cooler?

The white tile felt cooler. White reflects the Sun’s heat, while black absorbs it.

Write

If you have to paint the roof of your school or home white, what would happen?

The white roof would reflect the Sun’s heat. The rooms below would stay cooler, and we would need fans and coolers less.

Discuss

If your area is getting warmer, what actions can be taken to keep it cool?
  • Plant more trees.
  • Paint roofs white.
  • Keep windows open for breeze.
  • Save electricity and use fewer vehicles.
  • Protect ponds, lakes and green spaces.

Activity 4

Collect dripping water in a glass. How many glasses would become full in one day?

Time taken to fill one glass: 10 minutes.

Glasses filled in 1 hour = 60 ÷ 10 = 6 glasses.

Glasses filled in 1 day = 6 × 24 = 144 glasses.

Your answer will depend on how fast your tap drips.

Discuss

1What are some easy things we can do in our school to prevent the wastage of water?

Close taps after use. Report and fix leaks. Drink water from a glass. Use leftover water for plants. Put up “Save Water” posters.

2How can you collect and use rainwater at home or in school?

Rainwater from the roof can be sent through pipes into a tank or a recharge pit. This water can be used for gardening, cleaning and flushing.

Greenery Around Us

1Name the trees on your campus or near your school.

Neem, peepal, banyan, mango, ashoka and gulmohar.

2Which birds and insects have you seen near the plants or trees on your school campus?

Birds: sparrows, crows, mynas, parrots and bulbuls. Insects: butterflies, bees, ants and ladybirds.

Activity 5

Measure the temperature of water kept under a tree and under the Sun.
Water/TemperatureAt StartOne Hour Later
Under the tree28 °C29 °C
Under the Sun28 °C34 °C

What do these readings tell us? The water under the Sun became much warmer. Trees give shade and keep the surroundings cool.

Sample readings are shown. Write the readings you actually measure.

3Find the names of trees and plants that attract birds and butterflies.

Birds: neem, peepal, banyan, guava and jamun. Butterflies: marigold, hibiscus, ixora, zinnia and curry leaf plant.

Traffic Signs

What do you think about what Mohit said?

Mohit is right. Many accidents happen because people break traffic rules. They drive too fast, jump signals and do not wear helmets.

1Find out and write at least three traffic rules.
  1. Stop at the red light and go only at the green light.
  2. Cross the road only at the zebra crossing.
  3. Always wear a helmet on a two-wheeler and a seat belt in a car.
2Think and write about what you saw at the school gate.

At the school gate, many vehicles were parked on the road. Children were crossing between moving vehicles. Some bikes were going very fast.

Design a signboard for the school gate.
Besides making signboards, what else can we do to improve traffic near the school?

Have traffic volunteers at the gate. Make speed breakers and a zebra crossing. Ask parents to park away from the gate. Encourage walking and cycling in groups.

Fire Safety

1Where is the fire extinguisher kept in your school?

It is kept on the wall near the staircase and outside the school office.

2In case of a fire, where is the assembly point in your school?

The assembly point is the school playground.

3What should you do if there is a fire or if you smell smoke?

Stay calm and tell a teacher at once. Leave by the nearest exit without running. Crawl low under smoke with the mouth covered. Never go back inside. Go to the assembly point. Call 101 for the fire brigade.

Activity 6

Discuss the situations. What would you do, and how can we prevent such incidents?
  1. Pushing and skipping the line: I would politely ask them to wait for their turn. Teachers can make line rules.
  2. Scribbling on the bench: I would ask the student to stop and tell the teacher. We should all care for school property.
  3. Throwing a wrapper: I would pick it up and put it in the dustbin. Then I would explain to the younger student why littering is wrong.
  4. Teasing a student: I would stand by the student and tell a teacher. We should be kind and stop bullying.
  5. Noise in a park: I would ask my friends to keep quiet. Public places must be shared with respect.

Let us reflect

1Which classroom do you think is the nicest and why?

The library is the nicest room. It is bright, quiet and full of interesting books.

2Create a happiness tree.
3Write a letter to your teacher on ‘My School — My Happy Place’.

Dear Teacher,

I love coming to school every day. My school is my happy place. I meet my friends, play in the big ground and learn new things. You always help me when I am stuck. Our green garden and clean classrooms make me feel fresh. Thank you for making school so joyful.

Your loving student,
Riya

4Which actions would you extend to your home, neighbourhood and communities to make it a happy place for all?

I would start separating waste at home. I would keep two bins — green for wet waste and blue for dry waste. I would ask my neighbours to do the same. Wet waste can be turned into compost for our plants. This will keep our area clean and healthy.

5Imagine a day in school from someone else’s perspective. Write a diary entry.

Diary of a student who uses a wheelchair

Today, I reached school on time. The new ramp at the gate made it easy to come in. But the library is on the first floor, so I could not go there. That made me sad. At lunch, my friends pushed our desks together so I could sit with them. That made me smile.

6As principal for a day, what three changes would you make?
  1. Build ramps and keep the school clean and safe for everyone.
  2. Plant more trees and start a butterfly garden.
  3. Start a “kindness corner” where students can share their feelings.
7Act out the given situations in groups.
8Write a one-minute speech for the morning assembly on ‘My Dream School’.

Good morning, everyone. My dream school is clean, green and full of kindness. It has many trees, a garden and a big library. No water or electricity is wasted. Teachers, sanitation workers and students all work together to keep it this way. Every student can help by using dustbins, saving water and being kind to others. Let us make our dream school real. Thank you.
