4. knows more about animals than the local veterinarians

IIFill in the blanks by choosing the suitable option.

Doctor Dolittle reacts to Polynesia’s information about animal languages with both excitement and curiosity. He rushes to write the bird words she provides and is interested in learning more.

IIIDo you think Doctor Dolittle would be famous as an animal doctor? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes, he would be famous. He can learn the language of animals. So, animals can tell him where the pain is. He will understand their problems and cure them easily. Happy animals will also tell others about him.

Let us discuss (Part II)

IWhat became a common sight in Puddleby after Doctor Dolittle started treating animals?

2. Farm animals wearing glasses

IIWhat challenges might Doctor Dolittle face if more and more animals come to him for help? How might he overcome them?

Challenges: He may not have enough time, space or medicines for so many animals. He may get very tired. Different animals may also fight with each other while waiting.

Solutions: He can make separate waiting areas and doors for each kind of animal. He can give each patient a fixed time. He can train helpers like Polynesia and Jip to assist him.

(i) The expression ‘Good Gracious’ can be replaced by ______!
B. gosh

Because the Doctor would not have understood her.

(iii) Polynesia had been munching on a food item while talking to Doctor Dolittle. (True/False)
True

(iv) How did Doctor Dolittle feel according to the extract?
B. surprised

I.2Read the extract and answer the questions.
“I would like a pair like yours,” said the horse—“only green. They’ll keep the Sun out of my eyes while I’m ploughing the field.” …

(i) digging : flower bed :: ______ : field
ploughing

(ii) Doctor Dolittle’s attitude in the extract is ______.
C. understanding

(iii) We can conclude that doctors take animals for granted because ______.
animals do not complain about their problems.

(iv) Do you agree with the concluding sentence of the extract? Why/why not?
Yes, I agree. Animals cannot tell us where they feel pain. An animal doctor has to observe carefully and understand them without words. So, it needs more skill than treating people.

IIAnswer the following questions.

1. How can we say that Polynesia was a good trainer of animal language?
Polynesia taught the Doctor slowly and patiently all afternoon. She gave him bird words to write down. She also explained how animals talk with their ears, tails and noses. With her help, the Doctor learnt the language so well that he could talk to animals himself.

2. Explain how Doctor Dolittle gave equal and individual attention to each animal who came to him for treatment.
He made separate doors for horses, cows and sheep. Even the mice had a tiny tunnel to the cellar. He went round to each group. He listened to every animal in its own language and gave it what it needed, like green spectacles for the horse.

3. How does Doctor Dolittle’s readiness to follow the parrot’s advice highlight the importance of listening to different viewpoints?
The Doctor did not ignore the advice just because it came from a parrot. He listened and learnt from her. This changed his life and made him famous. It shows that we should be open to good ideas from anyone.

4. Which qualities of Doctor Dolittle made him famous among the animals? Explain with evidence from the text.
He could talk to animals in their own language, so they told him where the pain was. He was caring—he got green spectacles for the horse exactly as it wanted. He was well-organised, as he made special doors for different animals. He was also patient and kind.

5. What changes do you think would happen in the world if people suddenly gained the ability to understand and communicate with animals?
People would understand the needs and feelings of animals. Pets and farm animals would get better care. People would be kinder and stop cruelty to animals. We could also protect wild animals and their homes better.

IIIWhat is the best way to take care of stray and abandoned animals? Give reasons.

We can give food and water to stray animals, as they often stay hungry. A sick or injured animal should be taken to an animal shelter, where it gets proper treatment. If we have space and time, adopting an animal is the best way, as it gets a safe and loving home.
