(a − d) + a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) = 12
∴ 4a + 2d = 12 ∴ 2a + d = 6 … (I)
(a + d) + (a + 2d) = 14 ∴ 2a + 3d = 14 … (II)
Subtracting (I) from (II):
2d = 8 ∴ d = 4
From (I): 2a = 2 ∴ a = 1
Terms: a − d = −3, a = 1, a + d = 5, a + 2d = 9
The terms are −3, 1, 5, 9.
9If the 9th term of an A.P. is zero then show that the 29th term is twice the 19th term.
t9 = a + 8d = 0 ∴ a = −8d
t19 = a + 18d = −8d + 18d = 10d
t29 = a + 28d = −8d + 28d = 20d
∴ t29 = 20d = 2 × 10d = 2 × t19
Hence the 29th term is twice the 19th term.

Second A.P.: a = 24, d = −3 ∴ tn = 24 + (n − 1)(−3)
9 − 2(n − 1) = 24 − 3(n − 1)
∴ (n − 1) = 15 ∴ n = 16
t16 = 9 + 15 × (−2) = 9 − 30 = −21 (also 24 + 15 × (−3) = −21)
n = 16, and the 16th term of both is −21.
6If sum of 3rd and 8th terms of an A.P. is 7 and sum of 7th and 14th terms is −3 then find the 10th term.
t3 + t8 = (a + 2d) + (a + 7d) = 7 ∴ 2a + 9d = 7 … (I)
t7 + t14 = (a + 6d) + (a + 13d) = −3 ∴ 2a + 19d = −3 … (II)
Subtracting (I) from (II):
10d = −10 ∴ d = −1
From (I): 2a − 9 = 7 ∴ a = 8
t10 = 8 + 9 × (−1) = −1
t₁₀ = −1
7In an A.P. the first term is −5 and last term is 45. If sum of all numbers in the A.P. is 120, then how many terms are there? What is the common difference?
Sn = n2[t1 + tn]
120 = n2[−5 + 45] = 20n
∴ n = 6
t6 = a + 5d
∴ 45 = −5 + 5d ∴ d = 10
There are 6 terms; common difference d = 10.
8Sum of 1 to n natural numbers is 36, then find the value of n.
n(n + 1)2 = 36
∴ n2 + n − 72 = 0
∴ (n + 9)(n − 8) = 0
∴ n = −9 or n = 8
n is a natural number. ∴ n = 8
n = 8
9Divide 207 in three parts, such that all parts are in A.P. and product of two smaller parts will be 4623.
Let the parts be a − d, a, a + d (with d > 0).
(a − d) + a + (a + d) = 207 ∴ 3a = 207 ∴ a = 69
Product of the two smaller parts: (a − d) × a = 4623
∴ (69 − d) × 69 = 4623
∴ 69 − d = 67 ∴ d = 2
Parts: 67, 69, 71
Check: 67 + 69 + 71 = 207 and 67 × 69 = 4623
The parts are 67, 69 and 71.
10There are 37 terms in an A.P., the sum of three terms placed exactly at the middle is 225 and the sum of last three terms is 429. Write the A.P.
With 37 terms, the middle term is t19, so the three middle terms are t18, t19, t20.
t18 + t19 + t20 = (a + 17d) + (a + 18d) + (a + 19d) = 3a + 54d = 225
∴ a + 18d = 75 … (I)
The last three terms are t35, t36, t37: 3a + 105d = 429
∴ a + 35d = 143 … (II)
Subtracting (I) from (II):
17d = 68 ∴ d = 4
From (I): a = 75 − 72 = 3
The A.P. is 3, 7, 11, 15, …, 147
11If first term of an A.P. is a, second term is b and last term is c, then show that sum of all terms is (a + c)(b + c − 2a) / 2(b − a).
First term = a, common difference d = b − a, last term tn = c
c = a + (n − 1)(b − a)
∴ n − 1 = c − ab − a
∴ n = c − ab − a + 1 = b + c − 2ab − a
Sn = n2[first term + last term] = n2(a + c)
= (a + c)(b + c − 2a)2(b − a)
Hence proved.
12If the sum of first p terms of an A.P. is equal to the sum of first q terms then show that the sum of its first (p + q) terms is zero. (p ≠ q)
Sp = Sq
p2[2a + (p − 1)d] = q2[2a + (q − 1)d]
∴ 2ap + p(p − 1)d = 2aq + q(q − 1)d
∴ 2a(p − q) + d[p2 − q2 − (p − q)] = 0
∴ (p − q)[2a + (p + q − 1)d] = 0
Since p ≠ q: 2a + (p + q − 1)d = 0
Sp+q = p + q2[2a + (p + q − 1)d] = p + q2 × 0 = 0
Hence the sum of the first (p + q) terms is zero.
13If m times the mth term of an A.P. is equal to n times nth term then show that the (m + n)th term of the A.P. is zero.
m × tm = n × tn
m[a + (m − 1)d] = n[a + (n − 1)d]
∴ a(m − n) + d[m2 − n2 − (m − n)] = 0
∴ (m − n)[a + (m + n − 1)d] = 0
For different terms m ≠ n, so a + (m + n − 1)d = 0
But tm+n = a + (m + n − 1)d ∴ tm+n = 0
Hence the (m + n)th term is zero.
14₹ 1000 is invested at 10 percent simple interest. Check at the end of every year if the total interest amount is in A.P. If this is an A.P. then find interest amount after 20 years. Complete the following activity.
Simple interest = P × R × N100
Simple interest after 1 year = 1000 × 10 × 1100 = 100
Simple interest after 2 years = 1000 × 10 × 2100 = 200
Simple interest after 3 years = 1000 × 10 × 3100 = 300
The simple interest for 4, 5, 6 years will be 400, 500, 600 respectively.
The interests 100, 200, 300, … form an A.P. From this d = 100 and a = 100.
tn = a + (n − 1)d
t20 = 100 + (20 − 1) × 100
t20 = 2000
Simple interest after 20 years = ₹ 2000
