In-Text Questions & Activities

1Can you tell? (Page 30)

Why are all the house types shown in the pictures not seen in our surroundings?
All house types are not seen in our surroundings because house construction depends heavily on the local climate, available natural materials, and the landforms of the region, which vary across the world.

Which are the regions where such types of houses are found?
Igloos are found in the Tundra region, wooden stilt houses in the Equatorial region, mud and hide tents in Grasslands and Deserts, and concrete buildings in urban areas.

Would you like to stay in a house built of ice? Why don't we build such houses?
While it might be interesting, we cannot build houses of ice in our surroundings because our climate is warm/hot, and the ice would quickly melt.

What brings about differences in people's clothing?
Differences in climate and temperature bring about differences in clothing. People in cold regions require thick fur or woollen clothes, while people in hot regions wear loose, light cotton clothes.

Where do you think khubz, insects and ants also form a part of the diet of the people?
Khubz (a type of Arab bread) is consumed in the Hot Desert regions, while insects and ants are consumed by certain tribal groups in the Equatorial regions.

Can the animals from polar regions like polar bears and penguins be kept in tropical zoos?
No, animals like polar bears and penguins have thick fur and blubber adapted for extreme cold. Keeping them in tropical zoos without specialized, refrigerated enclosures would be harmful or fatal to them.

Which natural regions are found in India?
The Monsoon Region, Mountainous Region, and Hot Desert Region are found in India.

Which continent comprises a major portion of the hot desert type region?
The continent of Africa comprises a major portion of the hot desert type region (e.g., Sahara, Kalahari).

Which continent has the highest diversity in terms of natural regions?
The continent of Asia has the highest diversity in terms of natural regions.

Why are there fewer natural regions in the southern hemisphere than those in the northern hemisphere?
There are fewer natural regions in the southern hemisphere because the proportion of landmass is significantly smaller compared to the vast landmasses in the northern hemisphere.

Which natural region occupies the largest area in the world?
The Taiga Region occupies the largest area in the world.

Where else do we find conditions similar to the continent of Antarctica?
Conditions similar to Antarctica are found in Greenland and other Ice Cap / Tundra regions in the far north.

Through which natural regions does the Prime Meridian pass?
From north to south, the Prime Meridian passes through the West European, Mediterranean, Hot Desert, Sudan (Savanna), Equatorial and Ice Cap (Antarctica) regions.

3Answer the following questions (Page 36)

Which natural region consists of short-lived vegetation?
The Tundra Region consists of short-lived vegetal life.

In which natural region will you find the kraals?
Kraals are found in the Grasslands (Sudan Type) or Savanna region.

Which region has winter rains?
The Mediterranean Region receives rains in winters.

In which natural regions are gorillas and chimpanzees found?
Gorillas and chimpanzees are found in the Equatorial Region.

In which natural region is the land surface in the forests devoid of vegetation?
The land surface is largely devoid of undergrowth vegetation in the Taiga Region (due to acidic pine needles) and the Equatorial Region (due to the dense canopy blocking sunlight).

Which regions favour dairy farming?
The West European region and the Temperate Grasslands (Prairies, Steppes) favour dairy farming.

Which region is favourable for fruit production?
The Mediterranean Region is highly favourable for fruit and flower cultivation.

4Think about it. (Page 36)

Why are animals like lions not found in equatorial forests?
Lions hunt in open grasslands (Savanna) where they have space to run and spot their prey. Equatorial forests have extremely dense vegetation and swampy land, which is not a suitable habitat for lions.

Why are people in the hot deserts engaged mostly in animal rearing?
Agriculture is very difficult in hot deserts due to a severe lack of water and infertile soil. Animal rearing (camels, sheep, goats) is more feasible as these animals can survive harsh conditions and provide milk, meat, and hides.

Why do people in hot deserts live a nomadic life?
People in hot deserts live a nomadic life because they must constantly travel in search of scarce water sources (oases) and pastures for their animals.

Why are carnivorous animals found in the grasslands?
Grasslands support large populations of herbivorous animals (like zebras, deer, and antelopes) due to the abundance of tall grasses. Carnivorous animals are found here because they have a plentiful supply of prey.

Exercises

Q1Read the following statements carefully. Correct the wrong ones and write them down.

(1) Due to its mild and warm climate, people from the West European region are not energetic.
Wrong.
Corrected statement: Due to its mild climate, people from the West European region are industrious and enthusiastic.

(2) The prairie region is called the wheat basket of the world.
Right.

(3) The trees in the Mediterranean region have oily leaves and the bark is quite thick. There is a high rate of transpiration.
Wrong.
Corrected statement: The trees in the Mediterranean region have oily leaves and thick bark, which helps to reduce the rate of transpiration during dry summers.

(4) The camel is an important animal of the hot desert region as it can survive without water and is useful for transport.
Right.

(5) Carnivorous animals like tigers and lions are found in large numbers in the equatorial regions.
Wrong.
Corrected statement: Carnivorous animals like lions and cheetahs are found in large numbers in the Grasslands (Sudan type) or Savanna regions, not equatorial regions.

Q2Give geographical reasons:

(1) People in monsoon region are mainly engaged in agriculture.
The Monsoon region receives rainfall in specific seasons from the South-West monsoon winds. The summer temperatures (27° to 32°C) and adequate rainfall (250 to 2500 mm) create highly favorable conditions for crop cultivation, making agriculture the main occupation.

(2) Trees in equatorial forests grow tall.
The Equatorial region experiences high heat and heavy rainfall throughout the year, leading to dense evergreen forests. Trees grow very tall and develop an umbrella-like canopy as they compete with each other to reach the sunlight.

(3) Vegetation is short-lived in the Tundra region.
The Tundra region experiences an extremely cold climate with mean winter temperatures around -20°C to -30°C. The ground is covered with snow for most of the year, allowing only short grass, small shrubs, lichens, and moss to grow during the brief, mild summer.

Q3Answer the following questions:

(1) What is the latitudinal extent of the Taiga region?
The Taiga region extends approximately between 55° and 65° North parallels.

(2) Name any three herbivorous animals from the Sudan region. What has nature endowed them with for self-protection?
Three herbivorous animals from the Sudan region are the zebra, giraffe, and elephant. Nature has gifted them with speedy legs to run away from predators, and their skin has colorful spots or stripes/bands that help them camouflage in the tall grasses.

(3) What are the characteristics of the Monsoon region?
The Monsoon region extends between 10° and 30° North and South of the equator. It has summer temperatures between 27°C and 32°C and winter temperatures from 15°C to 24°C. The region receives 250 to 2500 mm of rainfall in specific seasons from the South-West Monsoon winds, though the distribution is highly uneven and variable. It features semi-evergreen and deciduous forests.
