(A) Land use for public facility are extremely important in urban areas.
In urban areas, the population is extremely dense and continually increasing. To cater to the various basic, emergency, and administrative needs of this burgeoning population, local governing bodies and state governments must provide essential services. These include hospitals, post offices, police stations, schools, and colleges. Such public facilities diffuse the tensions and struggles of everyday city life, making the land reserved for them extremely important.
(B) The record of the ownership of non-agricultural land is the same as that of the agricultural land.
Both agricultural and non-agricultural land records essentially serve the same core purpose: they act as an official record of ownership rights. Whether it is a 7/12 extract for agricultural land or a Property Card for urban non-agricultural land, both documents legally record the name of the owner, the exact area of the land, the rights of access, and the taxes or assessments levied on the property by the government.
(C) A region can be classified as developed or developing on the basis of landuse.
The pattern of land use directly reflects the primary economic activities of a country. Developing countries generally have a larger proportion of their land devoted to primary activities like agriculture and forestry. On the other hand, developed countries, driven by advanced technology and industrialisation, dedicate a much higher percentage of their land to secondary and tertiary activities, such as commercial zones, industrial areas, transport networks, and public utilities.
(A) Why is agriculture important in rural land use?
In rural areas, agriculture is the main and most widespread occupation. Because a vast majority of the rural population depends on farming and agro-based activities for their livelihood, the maximum available land is naturally utilized for cultivation (arable land), fallow land, and pasturelands for livestock. Consequently, rural settlements are also located close to these agricultural fields, making agriculture the most dominant and important feature of rural land use.
(B) State the factors affecting land use.
The factors affecting land use are divided into two categories:
- Factors affecting Rural land use: Climate, soil type, type of slope, irrigation facilities, natural resources, and government policies.
- Factors affecting Urban land use: Location and site, natural resources, housing development policies, transportation routes, industrialisation, trade and commerce, playgrounds and entertainment facilities, and government policies.
(C) Clarify the differences between rural and urban land uses.
| Rural Land Use | Urban Land Use |
|---|---|
| Primarily revolves around primary activities like agriculture, animal husbandry, and forestry. | Dominated by secondary and tertiary activities like industries, trade, transport, and commerce. |
| Due to sparse population, residential areas occupy a very small extent of the total land. | Due to dense population and limited space, residential and multi-story housing occupy the largest portion of land. |
| Classified mostly into arable land, fallow land, forest land, and pasturelands. | Classified into commercial, residential, transport, public utility, and recreational areas. |
(D) Differentiate between 7/12 extract and property card.
| 7/12 Extract | Property Card |
|---|---|
| It is the official record of ownership for agricultural land (rural areas). | It is the official record of ownership for non-agricultural land (urban areas). |
| Issued by the revenue department and is available with the Talathi of the village. | Issued and made available by the urban land records department. |
| Contains details like types of crops grown, area under crops, loans taken for agriculture, and occupant class. | Contains details like city survey number, plot number, amount of tax assessed, and rights of access. |
Note: The map reading, obtaining local town information, and reading the 7/12 extract in the activity section are practical tasks to be performed by students with the help of their parents and teachers.
