About this Chapter: This chapter contains creative activities to encourage students to write their own poetry. You can use the model poems provided below as inspiration to write your own unique verses.

1Write a set of rhyming words. Make sentences or meaningful phrases in which the rhyming words appear at the end. Arrange the sentences or phrases in the form of a poem.

The golden stars are shining bright,
In the dark and silent night.
The glowing moon is a beautiful sight,
Filling the world with silver light.

2Think of something that you like very much. Describe it in as much detail as you can, stressing the part you like best. Make use of suitable adjectives, adverbs or comparisons. Arrange the lines one below the other in the form of a poem.

My little rabbit is cuddly and soft,
As white as the winter snow.
He wiggles his nose and looks aloft,
And hops everywhere I go.

3Observe things in your surroundings carefully. Write short but good descriptions of what you see, hear, smell, feel, etc. Arrange your observations in short lines written one below the other, in the form of a poem.

A cool breeze blows through the trees,
Carrying the sweet fragrance of flowers.
Bright colours dance in the morning light,
As nature wakes up from its quiet hours.

4How do you feel when you are very happy or very angry or very sad? What do you say to yourself on these occasions? Try to write it down and arrange it in the form of a poem.

Why did I speak so loud and fast?
How could I let my anger last?
Never will I say those words again,
For anger only brings us pain.
